How to Add an Extra Human Touch to Your Social Platforms
By Kathleen Montecillo

There’s nothing quite like a brand on social media with a punch of personality. Using an engaging voice in every caption/comment/message makes a huge difference in getting people’s attention. And on the flip side, run-of-the-mill sales talk is a sure way to make your brand forgettable. Putting some extra thought behind your voice (aka, giving it an extra human touch) is key to getting noticed — and getting people to talk back. Here’s where to start:

1. Post smart.

People follow you because they want to see awesome content. So make sure you post things they want to get their eyes on. Before sharing anything, put some thought behind it. Ask yourself: Will my followers find this helpful? Will it catch their attention? And is this something they’re likely to share?

2. Don’t forget emotion.

The key to making a connection? Real emotion. Rather than just posting about your products/services, create and share content that your followers can empathize with. The best way to get close to your customers is through stories that tug at the heartstrings.

3. Keep it short and sweet.

Your followers are busy too. If what you’re sharing is long/complex, chances are they’ll scroll right past it. (You would, right?) So keep it simple — that way, it’s a lot easier for people to follow along. And bonus: You develop a reputation for being a good source of information.

4. Personalize your responses.

“Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate it.” Imagine yourself getting this response from a brand. Now imagine checking other people’s comments and finding the same copy/pasted reply over and over again. It doesn’t sound sincere anymore, does it? That’s why it’s important to personalize your responses. Make the extra effort to sound like a human and avoid sounding like a total robot.

5. Keep conversations going.

Simple yes and no answers are great, but if you want to engage people in conversations, you’re going to have to work a little harder. People like to feel that they’re being heard — that’s the key to building relationships. So listen, ask questions, ask follow-up questions, and ENGAGE. The more valued your followers feel, the more likely they’ll engage right back.
